Maisha Magic Movies Commissioning Brief

Electronic Media (M-Net), a content division of the MultiChoice Group, has brought audiences the very best in video entertainment for over 30 years. M-Net’s channels are a source of compelling and captivating content, offering a mix of authentic African programmes and the best international movies and series. We continuously strive to grow the film and TV industry by developing talent in front of, and behind the camera, and propel the launch of local and international careers.

What we are looking for:

Maisha Magic Movies is a new movie channel seeking new and exciting movie proposals from Kenyan filmmakers. We want movies with aspirational themes but also rooted in our diverse and dynamic realities.

We are accepting proposals for feature movies that will be 90 minutes in duration and in these languages: English, Swahili.

We are looking for projects with readily developed scripts. However, scripts will be requested from shortlisted filmmakers only.

Proposal Requirements

  • Logline: 25 words summary of the story. (Tell us the protagonist, what they want, and what is in the way of them achieving that.)
  • 500 words synopsis (Ensure the synopsis highlights all the key plot points from the beginning to the end)
  • Character bios of key characters. (Their goals, needs, desires and weaknesses)
  • Mood-board: Picture collage that gives us a glimpse on how your film will look like in terms of cinematography and production design, mood, and tone.
  • Team & Contacts: Who are the filmmakers behind the project? What have you done previously?
  • Mission statement: Why this story? Why are you the best person to tell the story?
  • Preliminary Budget: How much will it cost to produce the movie?
  • Showreel: A link to your showreel or sample of your work, no longer than 3 minutes.

Technical and editorial standards required by MNet will be set out in the production agreement.

MNet will have the final editorial and creative control over all aspects of the Commissioned Programming.

The Evaluation/Selection Process

Receipt of proposals will be acknowledged by email notification.

Shortlisted applications may be invited for pitches.

Our selection process will take roughly 12 weeks. If you don’t hear from us within 60 days after submissions deadline, consider your application unsuccessful.
